Why I Love Sausage Gravy Biscuit Casserole

For me, this casserole is the perfect combination of flavor and simplicity. It’s not just another gravy breakfast casserole; it’s a solution for those busy mornings when you’re juggling a million things. With a quick prep and everything baked in one casserole dish, it’s a lifesaver. Plus, it’s flexible enough to tweak based on what’s in the fridge.

Here’s why sausage gravy biscuit casserole is one of my go-to breakfast recipes:

  • Convenience: You can assemble it the night before, wrap it tightly with plastic wrap, and bake it fresh the next day.
  • Flavor: The combination of homemade sausage gravy, buttery biscuit dough, and melty cheese is pure comfort.
  • Family Favorite: It’s always a hit, and my family often asks, “Can we have this again next time?”

The Ingredients I Use For Sausage Gravy Biscuit Casserole

I like to keep things simple, but the ingredients really make this casserole shine:

  • Biscuit Dough: I use refrigerated easy biscuits, which bake up perfectly. Cutting them into quarters ensures the biscuit layer is evenly distributed.
  • Turkey Sausage or Ground Breakfast Sausage: Both options work beautifully, though my favorite sausage is turkey for a lighter twist.
  • Homemade Sausage Gravy: There’s nothing like making your own homemade gravy with sausage drippings, purpose flour, medium-high heat, and a generous dose of black pepper.
  • Cheese: Cup cheddar cheese works best for that gooey, golden topping, but sometimes I mix in pepper jack cheese for a kick.
  • Egg Mixture: Whisking eggs with milk creates the perfect binder for all the layers.

How I Make It

Step 1: Prepping Ingredients

Before anything else, I like to prep everything so assembly is seamless.

  • Sausage: I cook a pound sausage in a large skillet over medium heat, crumbling it as it browns. The sausage drippings are perfect for starting the gravy.
  • Gravy: Using the drippings, I melt two tablespoons of butter, whisk in flour, and gradually stir in milk until it thickens into a rich gravy. Season with onion powder, garlic powder, and black pepper.
  • Biscuits: I quarter the biscuit dough for the biscuit layer, ensuring they’re ready to line the bottom of the pan.

Step 2: Assembling the Layers

I always think of this casserole like a breakfast lasagna. Each layer adds something special:

  1. Bottom Layer of Biscuits: I place the quartered dough pieces evenly in the greased casserole dish.

2. Sausage Crumbles: Next, I scatter the cooked sausage over the biscuits for a savory base.

3. Egg Mixture: Pouring the whisked eggs over the sausage ensures everything binds together.

4. Top of the Gravy: I spread the creamy gravy evenly across the entire dish.

5. All The Cheese: Finally, I sprinkle shredded cheese on top for a golden brown finish.

Step 3: Baking Time

I bake the casserole at 350°F for 30-40 minutes. I check for doneness by inserting a knife into the center. I let it rest for 5 minutes before slicing.

Tips and Tricks I Swear By

  1. Make Ahead: For busy mornings, I assemble everything the night before and cover it with plastic wrap.
  2. Storing Leftovers: Leftovers stay fresh in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. I reheat individual servings in the microwave or oven.
  3. Serving Ideas: Pair this casserole with fresh fruit, a side of cinnamon rolls, or even a drizzle of hot sauce for an extra kick.
